Dear Bj,
Attention Shoppers!
Here is a red/green, blue/silver light special you can't
resist.
This week's ezine is chock-full of tips for making it out of
the mall alive and for taking care of yourself while you
are thinking of others.
But first, thanks so much for the great feedback about
last week's edition. Your thoughtful comments will
shape future ezines and I'm still glowing from your
praise! In addition, you inspired a question about holiday
memories you'll find below. Answers will appear next
week. Let's get started!
You Talk, I Lsten!
In answer to my questions about which day is best,
which
topics you want to get advice/tips on, links and pdf
files:
The general consensus is that Fridays work best (voila!)
and that pdf is not preferred.
Stress reduction came up several times as a needed
topic, along with support for life decisions and general
how-to-live a better life tips. In addition:
--Finding the job that follows my heart,
relationships, esp. the male/female ones and the
teen/parent ones:
motivation for self-care: the age old should
vs. want
to
dilemma. The
blame game and why so many of us play it and
how to
get out of it.-- (I'm writing an article on this very
subject.
It will be in an ezine soon.)
--Developing and maintaining healthy
relationships.
Could
really use a part 2 of the relationship workshop you did
last year.-- (You got it! Sign up for You Choose!
by sending an
email
with "You Choose" in the subject line. I'll put you on the
list for the January 13 class at Unity of Washington
DC)
--I like getting the general, "here's a different way
to
think about it." I could pretty much use help in all of
the
areas you have above because I think it's ultimately
about what's going on in my head and how I am
interacting in the world.-- (Bless your
heart! Yes
it is.
And I can help you have the kind of relationship with
yourself that makes your interactions with the world go
much, much better.)
Here are a few more comments:
Awesome, awesome, awesome. You rock!
Your ideas are great!
I enjoyed your holiday tips especially The Envelopes
This is mah=valous! I'm energized simply by reading it!
Can you differentiate between counseling and
coaching? Yes I can, and I will do so in a future
ezine. In the meanwhile, see my FAQs for a brief
decription. Hint: One looks at roots, the other looks at
remedies.
Hi Bj, this site looks great!
Thank you so much for this email. Blessings to you and I
look forward to your class in January. See you
there! 7th & A Sts. NE, Washington DC from
6:30-8:30pm. Let me know if you have any pre-class
questions.
And some great reader tips:
- Support a bison for a year, or do some other
charitable donation in the person's name.
- Make jam in the summer for Christmas gifts.
- Give yourself part of the gift by inviting friends to
share in an event.
Give away something you really love—so you can
still
visit it! (This tip will be part of an article I'm doing in two
weeks about clutter clearing for the New Year.)
Have more tips to share? Send me an email and I'll
include them next week.

Shop Like A Champion--Live to Shop Another Day |
 |
I ask this question all the time: When you get the safety
lecture on a plane, why do you think the flight attendant
tells you to put your oxygen mask on first?Say it
with me now...because you can't take care of
anyone/any thing else, if you don't take care of yourself
first! No matter how giving you want to be, if
you let your energy and goodwill get sapped, you just
can't be good to anyone else. Right?
Remember that as humans, we are the only creatures
who don't slow down in the winter months. Even in warm
climates, it is natural to need a breakfrom the
frenetic pace.
Be especially mindful in very cold climates. Artificial heat,
while great for keeping you toasty, saps moisture from
your system. Even slight dehydration automatically
makes you sluggish. If you aren't (forgive me for
being
blunt) pee-ing, every two hours, you are probably not
drinking enough. Be sure to drink lots of water or
non-caffeinated teas. Avoid too much sugar and
alcohol, too. I know it's hard. Sugarplums are everywhere
and making it through the office party without an extra
cocktail sometimes seems like a gruesome prospect.
Become a Zen shopper. No matter how agitated
you might want to get in packed parking lots, endless
lines and stores where that last, coveted Suzy burp-up
doll has been snatched up, remember, the people around
you are just as sodden, just as tired and just as
concerned about the expectations of others as you are.
They really aren't dedicated to an organized effort to
tick you off. Honest!
Instead of getting annoyed, look around for something
amusing to distract you, or take a magazine to read
while you are in line. I've been known to wade into
holiday shopping even when I'm not buying. The human
theatre can be fascinating!
And let's remember the obvious:
- Do NOT shop hungry or tired. Treat it like an
expedition up Mount Everest.
- Sensible shoes!
- Carry snacks or sit down to decent food every
two hours.
- Leave your coat in the trunk if you
can, and return frequently to the car to drop off
packages. Use a shoulder strap handbag or put your
wallet in a secure pocket. It's lot easier to be
creative, or stand in a line when your arms are not full.
- Shop with a buddy and divide up the labor.
- Use lists to avoid impulse buying and
over-spending.

Making Memories |
 |
|
What was the best part of the best holiday you
can
remember? (And how can you make more of that feeling
this year?)
For example: I loved it when a great group of friends met
at a movie theatre after a holiday feast to see a
blockbuster movie. Some liked the film and some
didn't,
but we all had more fun talking about it over
cocoa afterward than we did seeing it!
What kind of memories would you like to make?
