The Best Thing For YOU
My unique perspective I got into the helping professions for one very specific reason. I know this stuff works.
I know it because I’ve lived it. But with a lot of work on my part, and the help of some caring professionals, I changed my own story and built a life I love. The truth is, you do not have to have a good background to have a great life and I'm living proof. I’m happy, successful and growing all the time. I want you to be able to say the same and I can help you do it. My professional and educational journey What a trip it has been! I’ve evolved from striving to make change on a global scale (no kidding)… to working with organizations to increase efficiency, productivity and communication…to changing the world--one heart at a time-- in the therapy/coaching room. In 1986, I was the logistics coordinator for the Great Peace March, responsible for helping up to 1500 people walk across America. We walked from LA to DC. 3,742 miles and 9 months later, I was a completely different person. I knew my purpose was to make positive change. Settling in Washington DC, (after growing up in California), I spent years working in non-profit organizations. Over time, it became clear that the organizations I supported just weren’t as effective as most corporations or well-organized political groups. So what’s a do-gooder to do? My first thought was to get a degree in organizational development. So, I completed the American University/National Training Laboratory Master of Science program in Organizational Development. I learned that there is tremendous wisdom and strength in every group, and that I love the process of uncovering it. I also learned that a lot of potential goes tragically untapped, too much of the time! Years in the organizational trenches proved something that I’d suspected on the March: organizational problems are often just personal problems—amplified. Underneath the most complex corporate situations lie unresolved personal issues. At a staff retreat, I found myself wanting to tell the CEO, “This is really about a problem you’re having with your mother!” I realized that to be truly effective, I needed to be working with people on a much deeper level. So it was time to go back to school. It’s a good thing I love education! At Loyola College in Maryland, I got a Master of Science degree in Pastoral Counseling. But I got much more than that. I learned the value of using the whole self in the healing process. I developed my skills of observation and interpretation...and more than anything... I learned how to turn my basic view of life into an unbeatable strategy for helping people to build the lives they really want. My worldview goes like this: What you say to and about yourself…your Innerstory™…comes directly from habits of thought and behavior you learned very early in life. Those habits got you to where you are now…some of them still serve you…others do not. And the wonderful news is…whatever you’ve learned can be relearned in a way that works for you. Blending counseling and coaching has been a natural progression for me. As a mental health professional, I have unique insights into human motivation and behavior. I see the value in finding the roots and emotional remedies for your issues. As a coach, I see the value in forward-thinking, solution-oriented action. Sometimes a situation requires both! I’m passionate about helping as many people as I can to find self-awareness, understanding and acceptance that allows them to heal past old hurts, enjoy their lives to the fullest and acquire the tools to deal effectively with whatever comes their way. This passion inspires me to be quite direct in my approach. I know what it feels like to overcome issues you thought you’d never even understand. It’s a great feeling and I want to share it!
